5 Best Resources for Kidney Stone Information

Girl refusing food

“I don’t like foods that cause kidney stones!”

When I was first diagnosed with a kidney stone and medullary sponge kidney, like most people I started searching the Internet for more information and what I could do to prevent kidney stones.  I found a lot of information, sometimes contradictory and sometimes just plain bad. The Internet is full of information about kidney stone prevention and diets for kidney stones.  My main problem was: what was good information and what was bad?

Below are the 5 best sources for information on kidney stones that you can find.

#1 – KidneyStoners.org: http://KidneyStoners.org

This is my favorite site because it offers simple, useful information.  It is run by several urologists and a couple of kidney stoners.  The article, Three easy steps for kidney stone prevention offers the simplest and best advice on kidney stone prevention that I have read anywhere. Like the other sites listed here, there is a lot of information regarding conventional treatments, so you won’t find much in the way homeopathic or home remedies.

#2 – What I need to know about Kidney Stones: http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/stones_ez/index.aspx

This is one of several pages provided by the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC), which is a service of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The only problem I have with the information is the advice to take calcium supplements, which is have been shown in at least one study to increase the chances of stone formation.  I have formed at least one stone from calcium supplements, including calcium based antacids like Tums.

#3 – National Kidney Foundation: http://www.kidney.org/atoz/atozTopic_KidneyStones.cfm

This non-profit organization is the leading health organization in the United States that is dedicated to all types of kidney diseases and disorders.  They offer solid information on the subject

#4 – Urology Care Foundation: http://www.urologyhealth.org/urology/index.cfm?article=148

This is the site of the American Urological Association, focused on providing health information to patients.

#5 – Diet for Kidney Stone Prevention: http://kidney.niddk.nih.gov/kudiseases/pubs/kidneystonediet/index.aspx

This is page from the NKUDIC that provides good information regarding what to eat and what not to eat for various types of kidney stones.

There are a number of very popular medical sites (livestrong.com comes to mind) that have conflicting or even incorrect information. If you just stick with these five sites.

Mark’s Bottom Line

The websites above provide the best and most current information you can find regarding kidney stones. The only problem I have with these websites is that they focus on traditional medical procedures and don’t take into account any natural kidney stone remedies or solutions, such as Phyllanthus Niruri and Clear Kidneys™.  For the latest kidney stone news, bookmark this site or use the box on the side to subscribe to our weekly articles on various kidney stone health issues.
