Phyllanthus Niruri the Miracle Plant

Phyllanthus niruri in bloom

Phyllanthus niruri is what I call a miracle plant and I do not think that is an overstatement, at least as far as we ‘kidney stoners‘ are concerned. I have experienced first-hand the power of this simple plant in the fight against kidney stones. My team thinks that I am obsessed with Phyllanthus niruri, and I guess that’s true to an extent. I could probably write a (short) book from all that I know about, but Taby tells me to keep it under 500 words.  I’ll try to keep it under 1000. 😀

What is Phyllanthus niruri?

Phyllanthus niruri is the Latin/botanical name for an annual plant that grows wild throughout the world. It is found in the tropical and sub-tropical areas of the planet in both hemispheres, so it is likely that it existed some 300 million years ago when the Pangaea supercontinent was still together. In the U.S. it is found in Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, though I have read reports of it appearing in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, New and Mexico. Phyllanthus niruri grows prolifically because it’s seeds scatter as they mature.

In the U.S. it is generally regarded as an invasive weed, but in many other parts of the world it is a healing herb. It has been used for hundreds of years by medical practitioners and can even be found in pharmacies in Europe, South America, and Asia.

The Known Benefits of Phyllanthus Niruri

Phyllanthus niruri has the distinction of being one of the rainforest plants that captured the attention of pharmaceutical companies in the 80’s and 90’s, as they searched for cures for viral diseases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. The pharmaceutical companies largely abandoned their quest to develop any new drugs from Phyllanthus niruri because they could not isolate a single compound that they could effectively market and sell profitably.

Phyllanthus niruri has been proven in over 80 clinical and laboratory studies to have the following medical benefits:*

  • Smooth muscle relaxant, in particular the stomach, ureter, bladder, and uterus, which is why it should not be used by pregnant women;
  • Antilithic: dissolves calcium crystals responsible for the formation of kidney stones and prevents the formation of new stones;
  • Hepatoprotective: helps heal and protect damaged livers;
  • Antiviral: shows positive effect against HIV and hepatitis B and C;
  • Analgesic, shown to be a highly effective pain killer for certain types of pain, in particular the types of pain experienced by kidney stone sufferers (like us) and post-operative pain;
  • Hypocholesterolemic: it lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and increases HDL (good) cholesterol;
  • Hypoglycemic: naturally lowers blood sugar to within normal ranges;
  • Hypotensive: naturally lowers blood pressure;
  • Antispasmodic: reduces spasms of smooth muscle, in particular the type responsible for kidney stone pain;
  • Antimutagenic: Inhibits the growth of certain types of cancer cells, in particular sarcoma, carcinoma, and lymphoma;
  • Dissolves and eliminates gallstones, and prevents new gallstone formation;
  • High in antioxidants and phytonutrients.

On a personal note, Clear Kidneys™, which is our custom extract of Phyllanthus niruri, has provided me with the following benefits when I’ve taken it daily:

  • Provides incredible pain relief when I have had kidney stones, better than prescription opiates in my experience;
  • Has helped dissolve old stones and pass stone fragments painlessly;
  • Has prevented new kidney stones with regular use;
  • Lowered my LDL (bad) and raised my HDL (good) cholesterol to normal levels.

I take Clear Kidneys once a day, every day and I’m thankfully kidney stone free and my kidneys are clear.* 🙂

  • Side effects of Phyllanthus Niruri **

    One of the most interesting things about Phyllanthus niruri is that it has very few, if any, negative side effects.

    • For diabetics or those monitoring blood sugar levels, Phyllanthus niruri lowers blood sugar slightly, requiring adjustments to blood sugar medication;
    • For people taking beta-blockers (heart) medicines, Phyllanthus niruri lowers blood pressure slightly, so those who use Phyllanthus niruri should adjust medications appropriately;
    • Because it is a smooth muscle relaxant, women who are pregnant or trying to become pregnant should not use Phyllanthus niruri.
